The color-coded scheme allows the coder to visualize the branching patterns of the vascular families and assist in readily assigning the correct procedure code.

Thus, when coding and referencing a first-order vessel in the head & neck (left common carotid), a first-order vessel in the abdominal system (inferior mesenteric), or a first-order vessel in the lower extremities (common iliac), all use the same color scheme showing first-order vessels in red.
